According to an official release, the government of Belize requested the assistance in the wake of Hurricane Earl which stuck Belize on August third.

The contribution from Chile was made through the Chilean Fund Against Hunger and Poverty.

The official release says that the donation from Chile has been earmarked to support the restoration of agriculture livelihoods in those areas hardest hit by Hurricane Earl.

Within the United Nations system, UNDP is the agency designated to facilitate early recovery efforts in the aftermath of crisis or disasters.

The funds provided by Chile will support two thousand, five hundred small farmers in the Cayo, Orange Walk and Belize districts, through the repair of small scale agricultural infrastructure damaged by Hurricane Earl, including irrigation systems and greenhouses.

The Chilean Fund Against Poverty and Hunger is funded from an airline tax, and is used to respond to humanitarian emergencies as well as for development programmes.

For Chile, this modest yet significant contribution is a duty based on solidarity and reciprocity, as Chile has on many occasions received assistance from the international community.

It also demonstrates the friendship between Chile and Belize, and offers an opportunity to work alongside the UN system, and UNDP in particular.
