Dangriga culture event

A community event was staged at the Princess Royal Park in Dangriga town on Saturday afternoon, where the Revised National Gender Policy was the main focus of a public presentation by guest speaker, Attorney at Law Mrs. Audrey Matura Shepherd.  A planned march from the Drums of My Father’s roundabout into the town park did not materialize, and there are indications that area churches were not involved as the Churches had already committed to march with the Garifuna Christian diaspora in a separate simultaneous event.  Reports from Dangriga say that Mrs. Matura Shepherd gave a fiery … and well received presentation on the Revised National Gender Policy.  The reports from the culture capital say that Mrs. Matura Shepherd gave a well received comparison of the 2002 National Gender Policy and the recently launched 2013 edition of the Policy.

You say that : “Mrs. Matura Shepherd gave a fiery … and well received presentation on the Revised National Gender Policy. The reports from the culture capital say that Mrs. Matura Shepherd gave a well received comparison of the 2002 National Gender Policy and the recently launched 2013 edition of the Policy.”
BUT, what did she say? Is she is favour or against the new policy? How is your reader suppose to know? A “fiery presentation” really doesn’t clue me into how people are thinking about the gender policy in Belize? Clue my in – thanks

Erika: Thank you for participating in the discussion. Mrs. Audrey Matura Shepherd is on record as being opposed to the Revised National Gender Policy. Her comparison of the 2002 and the 2013 documents served to drive home her point that the two policies are completely different from each other. That is the read that I personally got from Saturday’s event in Dangriga. Again, thanks for taking part in the discussion.

To me one of the most facinating aspect is that I tend to think that less than 5% of activists on both sides have actually read either editions of the document. And perhaps 1% of Belizeans in general have actually read any one of them.

Based on a skim of the document – both look pretty similar by the way
