Belizean man dies in traffic accident in Guatemala

A Belizean man identified as Luis Mendez, 20, of Benque Viejo del Carmen is reported to have been killed in a road traffic accident on Tuesday evening in Guatemala. 

According to Emisoras Unidas, an online Guatemala news source, Mendez was the sole fatality, while 6 others were injured when a mini bus they traveling in overturned near mile 163 on the Inter-American Highway. 

The mini bus, according to initial reports, left Quetzaltenango on Tuesday afternoon enroute to Guatemala City when the incident occurred. 

A source in Guatemala City has confirmed to West Vision that the Belize embassy in Guatemala City has been notified of the incident and the death of Mendez. 

Our information is that Mendez was traveling from Xela, Quetzaltenanco to Guatemala City where he was scheduled to return to Belize on Tuesday night.

A source confirmed to West Vision that the mini bus in which Mendez was traveling crashed into a trailer and the result was the scene depicted in the accompanying photograph.  Mendez was the only fatality. Other Belizeans who were on the same mini bus were unhurt in the accident.

Mendez’ relatives from Benque Viejo del Carmen were enroute to Guatemala City on Tuesday night and are due to arrive in Solola on Wednesday afternoon to claim the body, which is at the town’s morgue. 

West Vision understands that the Belize embassy in Guatemala City is assisting the Mendez family with the arrangements to get the body of Luis Eduardo Mendez back home to Benque Viejo del Carmen for burial.
