Flood alert, NEMO issues advisory

By on August 24, 2013

The National emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has activated district emergency committees in all districts, except Stann Creek.

This is because of localized flooding due to heavy rainfall caused by a passing tropical wave.  So far only one road in the north, the San Antonio/Yo Creek Road has been declared close to vehicular traffic due to flooding.

Elsewhere in Orange Walk, localized flooding has been reported in San Lazaro, Guinea Grass, Trial Farm, Carmelita and San Lorenzo.

In the south, NEMO is keeping an eye on rising waters along the road from Jordan village to Blue Creek.  Surrounding villages are also being advised that river levels are rising across the Toledo district and as such residents need to be on high alert.

River levels are also on the rise in the Cayo and Belize districts.  The NEMO advisory asks motorists to exercise extreme caution when using the highways and secondary roads.

It specifically advises motorists not to cross flooded areas.

The NEMO advisory ends by calling on people in affected areas to seek safe shelter from flood waters as the rains are expected to continue today and for the rest of the weekend into early next week.
