Man killed in road traffic accident in Cayo

A San Ignacio town resident was knocked down and killed on Monday night on the George Price Highway.  The victim has been identified as Abilio Sergio Zuniga.

The incident happened around 7:30 pm on Monday between miles 63 and 64 on the George Price Highway near the Chuc’s Gas Station. 

The driver of a white pickup truck, Rene Guidel, 33, told police that he was heading into San Ignacio town when upon reaching the area where the accident happened, he was temporarily blinded by the high beams of another vehicle that was going in the opposite direction.

Guidel says that when he regained his sight, he noticed the bicycle rider in front of him and he tried to avoid hitting him; but was unsuccessful.

The right side of the pickup truck hit the cyclist and the rider was dragged a short distance under the vehicle.

The body of Abilio Sergio Zuniga now lies at the morgue at the San Ignacio community hospital awaiting a post mortem examination.
