Prime Minister announces senior government changes

Belmopan, CAYO. Tuesday, December 13, 2016. Prime Minister Dean Barrow this afternoon announced that Senator Vanessa Retreage, the Attorney General and Minister of Natural Resources, will demit office at the end of the year.

Senator Retreage completed here one year contract with the government last November and for pressing personal reasons, chose not to continue in office.

As a result of Senator Retreage’s departure, The Prime Minister, at a mid-afternoon press conference announced that the Speaker of the House of Representatives Michael Peyrifitte will succeed Retreage as Senator and will be appointed as the next Attorney General of Belize beginning on January 1, 2017.

Because of his appointment as a Senator, Peyrifitte will have to give up his post as Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament.

The Prime Minister also announced today that the majority side in the House will propose the election of retired nurse Laura Longsworth as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Regarding the Ministry of Natural Resources which was held previously by outgoing Senator Retreage, the Prime Minister is taking over as the new Minister of Lands.

Mr. Barrow explained at the Press Conference that the day to day running of the Ministry of Natural Resources will be vested in the Junior Minister in the now expanded Ministry of Finance, Senator Carla Barnett.

The Police portfolio is being transferred from the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; but the Junior Minister Elodio Aragon, Jr. will remain in charge of the day to day running of the police portfolio.
