PUP Statement on Mark Flowers

Belize City, BELIZE. Thursday, July 21, 2016. The Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) today issued a public statement in which it condemned “the continuing abuse and exploitation perpetrated on defenseless individuals by high officials who are sworn to serve and protect the public.”

The PUP names the head of the Gang Suppression Unit Superintendent Mark Flowers as one of the “high officials” they are concerned about, after allegations of the sexual abuse of a minor was made against the veteran police officer.

“We are outraged at this latest complaint against Mr. Flowers,” the PUP release said, as the Opposition called on the relevant authorities “to investigate this matter fully and fearlessly, with no special treatment to Mr. Flowers because of his position.”

While no official charge has been laid against the senior police officer, the PUP in its statement goes on to suggest that they have been “reliably informed” of who is the victim of the alleged sexual abuse.

The party is of the opinion that “if the police has been presented with a credible report and Mr. Flowers has not been charged, then he is receiving special treatment and protection which we deplore in the strongest terms.”

The PUP statement ends by calling on the National Committee for Families and Children and the Special Envoy for Women and Children and other child protection agencies “to raise their voices against the abuse of children.”
