Belize City, BELIZE. Tuesday, July 19, 2016. The Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) has released a statement on the murder of Llewelyn Lucas, 47.

Lucas’ severed head was found by police officers on Friday night inside of a vehicle in Belmopan.

A group of men including 46 year old William Mason; 29 year old Keron Fernandez; 30 year old Terrence Fernandez, Ernest Castillo, 20; and Ashton Vanegas, 23, were formally arraigned in Belize City today before Chief Magistrate’s Ann-Marie Smith on murder and kidnapping charges.

The PUP in its media release recommends that an international investigator be brought in to probe the gruesome murder of Lucas “since this case may require the police to question and possibly investigate sitting Cabinet ministers.”

Regarding William Mason, one of the men charged for the murder of Lucas, the PUP says that a thorough investigation is needed to determine “how this foreign-born individual with a shady past could have obtained a Belizean birth certificate and multiple gun licenses.”

The PUP also states that”if the police had investigated and arrested Mr. Mason” for the alleged kidnapping and extortion of thousands of dollars from two Mennonite persons “Lucas would probably have been alive today.”

Mason and the other men were arraigned today before Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith.

The men were remanded to the Belize Central Prison until their next court appearance on September 14, 2016.
