BDF mum on shooting of Staff Sergeant by Guatemalan farmer

Belize City, BELIZE. Tuesday, March 29, 2016. Three days after Belize Defence Force (BDF) Staff Sergeant Richard Lambey was shot by a Guatemalan farmer, the Commander of the BDF Brigadier General David Jones remains mum on the incident.

There has also been no official press release from the Ministry of National Security.

Sergeant Lambey was shot to the abdomen and hand during an exchange of gunfire with the Guatemalan farmer near the Valentin Camp in the Chiquibul Archaeological Reserve on Holy Saturday evening.

The BDF soldier is recuperating at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and is listed in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

While the nation waits for an official account of what transpired in the Chiquibul on Holy Saturday and Belize’s next course of action, the group Citizen’s Organized for Liberty through Action, COLA, has sent out with a statement, denouncing the shooting of Sergeant Lambey.

COLA says that the Holy Saturday’s incident is yet another reason for what it calls “an aggressive internationalization” of Guatemala’s unfounded claim to Belize and recent acts of aggression by our neighbor to the west.

COLA is calling for a “timely and relevant response” to the shooting of Sergeant Lambey by government and notes that the time for the blame-game is long past.

“This is no time to blame the media, no time to deflect deserved criticism,” said the COLA statement.

It goes on to chastise the government for sowing “indecision and lack of compassion” which has now led to the reaping of “aggression and intransigence.”

The COLA statement ends by calling on its partners, including the trade unions and Chamber of Commerce “to denounce these acts of aggression by Guatemala.”

    Hmmm….. Why so secretive? Why so mum? Guatemala would have ripped at us long time and demanded compensation. So why haven’t we done that? Very distasteful!
    Watbis happening with our Government? Damn!
