Belmopan man murdered; his body found in the Belize River

Belmopan, CAYO. Monday, April 11, 2016. A man was killed on Sunday morning and his body disposed of in the Belize River.

The victim has been identified as thirty nine year old Luis Ortiz, a resident of the Maya Mopan area of Belmopan.

Police say that sometime after three o’clock on Sunday Morning, Ortiz, also known as Chapin, was socializing with another man identified as forty year old Jose Gonzalez.

The two men were reportedly ambushed by a group of men as they drove by the cemetery in Roaring Creek village in Ortiz’ car.

Polilce say that Gonzalez who suffered a cut wound to the head and abrasions to his back, was thrown out of the car on the side of the road and Ortiz was carried off in the car.

The car was later found submerged in the Belize River in the Young Bank area of Camalote village.

A short distance away, police say that Ortiz’ body was found in the river near the Agripino Cawich Bridge with a cut wound to the back of the head and an injury to the left eye.

Belmopan police have since detained six men pending investigations.
