It is funded by the European Union at a cost of three point three million Euros and is one component of the “Accompanying Measures for Sugar programme,”that aims to enhance agriculture and tourism in the designated areas, in this case the Orange Walk district in the northern part of the country.

The official release says that “these roads form part of a network of 13 roads in Orange Walk and each road repaired connects several villages to the Northern Highway.”

One important benefit that the upgraded roads will readily bring to the area is to the sugar industry “as the roads are located in the main sugar producing areas and provide the farmers with an improved transport link to the sugar factory in Tower Hill, decreased transportation costs and improved accessibility for road users in times of inclement weather.

In her speech at the opening, Ambassador Amadei said that “road rehabilitation is only a part of the wider support to the sector to aid diversification, improve competitiveness and marketing. With better roads come better linkages, opportunities to diversify to other industries, faster transport times translating into efficiency, competitiveness and improved living conditions.”
