The 48 year old former comedian took over the presidency this evening and in his maiden speech as President promised to continue the fight against corruption.

A TNC correspondent in Guatemala City says that President Morales was greeted with a hug from his mother and received a round of applause from friends and members of his National Convergence Front party as he went on stage accompanied by his wife, Hilda Patricia Morales.

Among the international dignitaries that attended the inauguration was the Vice President of the United States of America Joe Biden, the highest-ranking US official to attend the inauguration of a Guatemalan president in three decades.

The new Guatemalan President has promised to spend more on health and education, but his critics are already lining up to see how he will go about fighting corruption and other pressing challenges facing Guatemala.
