Race Against Fire unites communities for forest fire awareness

San Pedro Columbia, Toledo. Saturday, April 4, 2015. The Ya’axche Conservation Trust today hosted the annual Race Against Fire.

The venue for the event was the school grounds in San Pedro Columbia village, Toledo.  

The event is designed to raise awareness about the dangers of forest fires.

Cristina Garcia is the Executive Director of the Ya’axche Conservation Trust.

Among the activities for the day was a poster competition on the theme of the event: “Faya! If yuh cyaan control it, nuh staat it.” [English: Fire, if you can’t control it, don’t start it.]

Garcia says she is satisfied with the response from the primary school children as it shows that they have grasped the idea behind the event and that they and their family understand the dangers of forest fires.

A football game featuring teams from surrounding communities and a beach cruiser bicycle race were also feature activities at today’s Race Against Fire.

The bicycle race was won by Charles Nunez from Punta Gorda town.

 He took home $300 in cash as well as majority of the station prizes.
